INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Concerned About your Student?

If you think your student would benefit from counseling services, our therapists want to talk directly with them by phone for a brief 10-15 minute consultation. This conversation will allow the therapist to hear their concerns and help identify the best way for them to get the help needed.

You are also welcome to call and discuss your concerns and how you might best be able to help your student. Call (619) 594-5220 between the hours of 9am and 4pm and ask for a consultation with one of our therapists.

Please remember that if at any time your student is struggling with a psychological emergency, a counselor will be made available to speak with them today.

For example, if your student is:

  • Grieving the recent death of a family member or friend
  • The survivor of a recent rape or physical assault
  • Considering harming themselves or someone else

We also encourage students to use San Diego’s free 24-hour counseling access line at (888) 724-7240. The well-trained professional staff are not only available 24 hours a day for immediate assistance regarding a psychological emergency, but are also very skilled in locating additional counseling resources in our San Diego community.

If the needs of the student are better met by a community provider referrals will be offered for off-campus resources.

Parents Play an Important Role In Adjustment to College

The primary objective of Counseling & Psychological Services is to help students with personal, emotional and adjustment issues so that they can be successful in college. We believe that you, the parents, play an extremely important role in helping us to meet that objective. Adjustment issues are a common experience for many students, particularly for first year students. Parents are usually the first to notice changes in their student's behavior, attitudes, or emotional expression that might indicate a problem. Talk with your student about your concerns. Let your student know that emotional adjustment issues are common among college students and that the Counseling Center can help.

A Note About Confidentiality

If your student is a client of the Counseling Center, federal and state law prohibits us from acknowledging that your student is a client or discussing their case in any way without specific written permission from your student. This law applies whether or not you have referred your student to us or have discussed your student's situation with us before they become a client. If you wish to follow up with us after referring or discussing your student, please encourage your student to sign a written authorization form when they come for counseling.
