About Our Program
Mission
Be smart as a goose - SOAR with pride of success into real opportunity, master your academics and build lasting relationships with the EOP Mentor Program which recommends you learn from the V flight formation of geese.
SOAR (Success, Opportunity, Academics, Relationship)
SOAR is the mentor program for the Office of Educational Opportunity Programs, Outreach and Success (EOPOS). Through its components of success, opportunity for academic development, retention and graduation it allows EOP students to SOAR. The SOAR Mentor Program pairs trained upper-class student mentors with incoming EOP students called protégés. Mentors serve as guides to assist new students through the maze of rules, regulations, expectations, and activities of general college life. They also help you to get connected to student organizations, cultural centers and anything else you need to be a successful student at SDSU.
SOAR Protege
- First semester students
- Students who would appreciate the guidance, support and friendship of an experienced SDSU student
- Students on academic probation (for the spring term)
- Having a friend/mentor to guide you through your first term at SDSU as a role model and advisory figure
- Learn more about campus resources
- Receive peer support and motivation
- Accelerates adjustment to campus
- Work with a high-achieving Junior or Senior EOP student
- Introduced to social and developmental campus activities
- Develop discipline
- Able to share thoughts, feelings, experiences, and ideas with someone who will not be judgmental
- One semester commitment
- Attend a mandatory orientation date to be determined
- Meet with your mentor once a week for an hour
- Attend a campus event with your mentor
- Allow your mentor to introduce developmental college activities. Activities include
but are not limited to:
- Time management techniques
- Study skills
- Resume workshop
- How to use library resources

SOAR Mentor
- Students with at least a Junior standing (60 units or more)
- Students with a keen interest in helping others
- Students with excellent faculty references
- Feeling further connected and creating community with the University and the EOP staff
- Gaining sufficient training/skills and hands-on experience that may be beneficial on your resume
- Increasing your awareness of the diversity at SDSU
- Becoming acquainted with other like-minded mentors, faculty and staff
- Gaining a greater understanding of the education system
- Commit to their protégé for a minimum of the protégé’s first semester;
- Are asked to spend a minimum of one hour per week with each protégé;
- Have already attended the University for four semesters, completed 60 units and maintain a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average;
- Are trained in relationship enhancement and communication skills and in the offerings of University services to be able to help a student succeed at the University.
