Chafee Grant

The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) administers this grant program for eligible students who are current or former foster youth. The California Department of Social Services will verify your foster youth eligibility status.

In general, you must:

  • Be eligible, or have been eligible, for foster care between ages 16 and 18
  • Have not reached your 26th birthday as of July 1st of the award year

Not all eligible students will receive a Chafee award. The California Student Aid Commission has limited funding and calculates awards throughout the year. Even if you are awarded, if you already have grants, scholarships, and other assistance that meets your Cost of Attendance, you will not receive any additional funding from the Chafee for that year.
